NGOs Propose Ban on Mining in Key Environmental Areas

The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and 10 other Non-governmental Organisations, led by the Centre for Environmental Rights, have proposed a list of areas of critical environmental value, where mining and prospecting should be prohibited.
This is in the national interest and is in compliance with many legislative imperatives, including the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. The proposal supports the sustainable development of South Africas mineral resources, whilst at the same time ensuring the protection of our most precious and sensitive natural environments, which, amongst others, will assist our country to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

The Centre for Environmental Rights is about to open its office, and its website is already up and running at www.cer.org.za. All basic information about the Centre is on the website, and you' will eventually find more and more notifications of things like draft legislation published for comment, new court judgements, etc.
We are still in the process of populating our resource library - the catalogue - which will take a while. Feel free to send to us resources that are harder to find, like unreported court judgements and particularly provincial and municipal legislation, which we can upload for others to share. If there are any law students out there who have some free time to assist with the upload of documents onto our digital library, please let us know - it's all hands on deck!
